Concept art from Arnold Tsang, Peter Lee & Bill Petras for Overwatch
Overwatch is multyplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The game emphasizes cooperative gameplay using a cast of various “heroes”. Each have their own abilities and roles within a team. While this contemporary approach takes away a little bit of freedom from the player by not letting them create their own character, it also gives space for a more coherent design from the developer.
The personalization is not completely eliminated though since the players will be able to unlock (buy?) various skins for said heroes. Many have called this game Blizzard’s Team Fortress because of the character based fast paced gameplay and there are also similarities in the design. Overwatch’s characters are very bright, colorful and cartoony with an opverall pg esthetic (even with the pre-release butt’s controversy). The overall look of the game is astonishing. The colors and the forms perfectly combine with the fun nature of the game, creating a perfect synergy between visuals and gameplay.
The heroes design also reflect their game classes: Tracer (an Offence hero with high mobility and able to deal large amounts of damage while having a low number of hit points) has a slender silhouette and long legs while Reinhardt (a Tank hero with a lot of hit points able to draw ) is a massive bulk of metal and muscles. The art direction is overall stunning making Overwatch not only one of the best games to play this year but also one of the best to look at.
